The Joy of the Agony

Figure on a cross

by Maria Warner-Dowrich

A Crimson flow,
streamed from below
the thorny crown
that pierced His brow
A rod- for a scepter to Him they gave
as they spat and mocked Him to His face
He was Beaten and Scourged!
Upon Him was laid the burden of the Cross-
a symbol of man’s sin-
which separated us from Him
But in love and humility
He wore the robe of man’s depravity
He bore it all-
to pay the total cost for man’s fall
He suffered and bled in agony
As He fell and crawled to Calvary’s tree-
they impaled Him there
both hands and feet-
Satan’s plan to defeat
-But-
The death He died was not His own
The death He died He died alone
Once -He died and rose for all
and defeated death’s final call
In Victory He prevailed
Now, our Savior we hail
Christ’s work has been complete!
In the joy of the agony, Oh how sweet,
He finished it on Calvary’s tree!

Philippians 3:10 That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His suffering, being conformed to His death.
